AI Leaders Roundtable: Open Telco AI and Mobile AI Initiatives

The GSMA would like to invite you to speak at the AI Leaders Roundtable at Mobile World Congress, Shanghai 2026.

Overview: Generative and agentic AI have transformed how consumers and enterprises work. Mobile networks themselves have only just begun their own AI transformation, and the gap between AI in the application layer and AI inside the network is now one of the largest opportunities - and exposures - in front of the mobile industry. The GSMA AI Leaders Roundtable is a two-part working conversation for senior AI leaders. Part 1 focuses on Open Telco AI - the open foundations the industry is building to make telco-grade AI possible. Part 2 focuses on the GSMA Mobile AI Project - the broader program that turns those foundations into deployed network capability, applications and services, on the path to AI-Native Networks and 6G.

Part 1 · Open Telco AI - Building the Open Foundations

Frontier general-purpose AI models continue to underperform on telecom-specific tasks - interpreting network telemetry, parsing 3GPP and ITU standards, reasoning about RAN, transport and core behaviour, or automating carrier-grade operations with the reliability network operators demand.

Open Telco AI (launched in Barcelona, 2 March 2026, with AT&T and AMD as founding supporters) is a global GSMA initiative to accelerate telco-grade AI through open collaboration across operators, vendors, AI developers and academia. It does for telecom AI what open standards did for cellular: lower the cost of adoption, raise the floor of quality, and create a shared platform on which the industry competes on value rather than reinventing foundations.

The Five Open Building Blocks

• Benchmarks & Telco Capability Index - industry-first framework for evaluating models on real-world telecom use cases (building on the GSMA Open-Telco LLM Benchmarks community with Hugging Face, Khalifa University, Linux Foundation).
• Open Models - a family of open telco-models released by AT&T, trained on open, publicly available data and designed to be extended by the community.
• Open Data - curated telecom-domain training, evaluation and red-teaming datasets the industry contributes to and draws from.
• Accessible Compute - GPU platforms and open toolchains provided by AMD with cloud partner TensorWave for training, fine-tuning, inference and evaluation.
• Community - active developer and research community spanning operators, vendors, hyperscalers, AI specialists, academia and standards bodies.

Part 2 · The GSMA Mobile AI Project - From Foundations to Deployment

The rapid evolution of mobile communication technologies and the accelerating advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are jointly giving rise to a new era – the Mobile AI era. In the Mobile AI era, the ubiquitous connectivity of mobile communication networks becomes the essential foundation for the widespread adoption and democratization of AI. As a result, Mobile AI has emerged as a transformative paradigm and a critical driver of global digital and intelligent development.

In the GSMA Mobile AI whitepaper launched at MWC26, four key functional dimensions - AI for Network, Network for AI, Mobile AI Agents/Devices, and Mobile AI Applications were identified and the rise of Agentic AI Devices including AI phones, AI glasses, AI vehicles, AI robots and AI toys was expected to deliver AI that is ubiquitous, trustworthy, and easy-to-use and shape the future of the whole world.
